I think what triggered this reflection for the narrator was
just having an “ah” moment. She might have been telling this story to a friend or
just remembering this moment and one day began to think of why Teresa acted the
way she did. The more she thought about it the clearer it must have been to the
narrator of one girl being confused about their identities. The narrator most
likely understand her child nemeses is that she is no longer a child and can
see the confrontation as more of some girl being cruel, but of one being
defensive and trying to find herself.
